Liveaboard from Lombok — 4D3N Luxury Phinisi Dive Experience

May 12, 2026

4 min read

A Lombok luxury liveaboard to Komodo is the most concentrated dive expedition Indonesia offers — 9 to 12 dives across four days covering Saleh Bay whale sharks, Sangeang volcanic muck dives, Komodo classics (Batu Bolong, Castle Rock, Crystal Rock), and Manta Alley. This guide covers what to expect, cabin standards, certifications required and 2026 pricing.

What is a Luxury Liveaboard

A liveaboard is a multi-day vessel where guests live on board between dive sites — eliminating daily harbour returns and unlocking distant reef systems. A luxury liveaboard adds suite cabins, en-suite bathrooms, chef-prepared meals and dedicated dive deck infrastructure on top of the standard liveaboard experience.

From Lombok, the liveaboard format is the only viable way to reach Komodo’s reef system — day boats cannot cover the 50nm one-way crossing within diving time windows.

Lombok Departure Advantage for Divers

Saleh Bay Whale Sharks (Bonus Day)

The single biggest advantage of a Lombok liveaboard over Labuan Bajo departures: dedicated 90-minute whale shark interaction at Saleh Bay’s resident feeding station. Peak frequency May-September. Snorkel at 5m, possible shallow scuba for certified divers.

Sangeang Volcanic Muck Diving

Active stratovolcano with underwater vents, hot water columns, black sand and rare critter biodiversity. Found nowhere else in the Coral Triangle. Exclusive to Lombok-departure routes.

Banta Island (Extended Routes)

Pristine reef passes between Sumbawa and Komodo. Hammerhead schools November-February. Less crowded than mainstream Komodo sites.

Standard 4D3N Dive Itinerary

Day 1 — Departure, Check Dive

Kayangan boarding 16:00. Overnight passage. Day 2 06:00 arrival Moyo. Check dive at Moyo Pinnacle (12m, gentle current, equipment shake-down).

Day 2 — Saleh Bay + Satonda

Whale shark snorkel/shallow dive at Saleh Bay (peak hours 06:00-09:00). Surface interval at Satonda. Afternoon wall dive at Satonda’s volcanic walls (25m, 30m+ visibility). Night dive optional at anchor.

Day 3 — Sangeang + Komodo North

Morning Sangeang volcanic muck dive (rare critters, black sand). Sail to Komodo. Two afternoon dives at Batu Bolong (current-driven coral wall) and Crystal Rock pinnacle.

Day 4 — Castle Rock + Manta + Komodo NP Exit

Sunrise dive at Castle Rock (advanced, currents). Surface interval at Komodo Island dragon walk. Final dive at Manta Point or Cauldron depending on tide. Disembark Labuan Bajo 14:00.

Diving vs Non-Diving Guests

Most liveaboards accept both divers and snorkellers. Non-diving partners enjoy:

  • Saleh Bay whale shark snorkel (no certification needed)
  • Komodo Island ranger walk and dragon viewing
  • Padar Island sunrise trek
  • Pink Beach swim
  • Onboard relaxation, photography, paddleboarding

FAQ

What’s the difference between liveaboard and cruise?

Liveaboards prioritise diving — 3-4 dives daily, dedicated dive deck, dive guide ratio 1:6, Nitrox available. Cruises emphasise sightseeing, cuisine and onboard hospitality with limited diving.

Do I need Nitrox certification?

Not mandatory but recommended for 4+ dive days. Most luxury liveaboards include EAN32 in price. EAN36/40 available with certification, USD 10/dive.

How physically demanding is a dive liveaboard?

Moderate fitness required: climbing dive deck stairs, lifting tank (15kg), 30+ minutes drift dives. Daily nap recommended.

Can I do my Open Water certification on a liveaboard?

Not recommended — certification dives need calm protected sites unavailable on the Lombok-Komodo route. Complete OW in Bali or Gili Trawangan beforehand, then join liveaboard.
